SUMMARY:Historic Preservation Field Survey
DESCRIPTION:Many historic buildings in downtown Everett and throughout Washington State were built with Unreinforced Masonry (URM). These buildings – which represent a significant era of Everett’s history and continue to serve as homes of our local businesses and community activity – can represent a significant risk in the event of a major earthquake. \nWe need to learn more about which buildings in our downtown are URMs. Once we map our district\, we can work with property owners and advocate for essential state resources to mitigate risks. \nIn partnership with the Emergency Management Division and Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation\, the Downtown Everett Association has been selected to pilot a volunteer-led effort to map URMs. The state has an existing – but incomplete – URM database that will be used as a starting block. Everett volunteers will come together to collect visual data to update this database. \nAnyone interested in historic buildings and Everett’s future is invited to participate as a volunteer in this pilot project. No prior experience with preservation or engineering is required. All volunteers will participate in an in-person training prior to hitting the streets with a buddy to collect building data. \nJoin us for an exciting morning of learning about historic buildings and mapping our downtown built environment. Walk away with a new skill and the knowledge you’ve helped us take an important step toward creating a more resilient city and state!
